Pamela Wakewich, PhD, is a Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Lakehead University, a co-principal (Lakehead site) of the Ontario Training Centre for Health Services and Policy Research and a cross-appointment in Human Sciences with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. She has been active in provincial and national women's health research initiatives serving as an executive member and Chair of the National Network on Environments and Women's Health, Centre of Excellence for Women's Health (York University) and as a public member of the Transitional Council of the Ontario College of Midwives.
Pamela's research expertise includes the sociology of health, illness and the body; gender and health in rural and northern communities; and qualitative methods for health research. She has published articles on changing perceptions of health and embodiment over the life course; the health effects of violence against women; gender, culture and health; and the use of photovoice to explore barriers and resources for seniors' health in rural and northern communities. Her current research projects include a study of transitions in masculinity and men's health in the changing northern economy and the gendered discourses on bodies and health during WWII.
