In September 2002, Roger took up his current position as Founding Dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, a joint venture of Lakehead University, Thunder Bay and Laurentian University, Sudbury in Canada. Prior to this, he was Professor of Rural Health for Monash University and Head of the Monash University School of Rural Health, Australia's first multi-disciplinary multi-level rural health academic unit.
Between December 1993 and February 1995, Doctor Strasser was Foundation Director of the Australian Rural Health Research Institute which was Australia's peak body for rural health research and chaired the Institute's Management Committee until May 1997. Between 1999 and 2002, Doctor Strasser was Assistant Editor, Thematic Issues, of the Australian Journal of Rural Health.
Since 1992, Roger has also had an international role as Chair of the Working Party on Rural Practice of WONCA, the World Organization of Family Doctors which developed the WONCA Policies on Training for Rural Practice, Using Information Technology to Improve Rural Health Care and Rural Practice and Rural Health. Doctor Strasser also chaired the Conference Scientific Committee for the First International Conference on Rural Medicine at Shanghai, China, May 1996 and the 5th World Conference on Rural Health Melbourne 2002 Organizing Committee.
In November 2002, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in recognition of his world leadership in the field of Rural Health. Also, during the 17th World Conference of Family Doctors in Orlando, Florida, in October 2004, he received a Fellow of WONCA award in recognition of his outstanding services to WONCA and family medicine around the world.
Doctor Strasser's past research includes A Study of Obstetrics in Rural Practice; A Study of the Effects of On-site X-ray and Ultrasound Facilities on Utilisation in General Practice; and A Study of the Attitudes of Victorian Rural General Practitioners to Country Practice and Training.
His other research activities include: A Study of Doctor and Patient Perceptions of General Practitioners as Resource Manager/Gatekeepers; Studies of the Health Service Needs and Health Service Delivery in Small Rural Communities; A Study of the Support Needs of GPs in Towns without Hospitals; the Extended Latrobe Valley Injury Study (ELVIS); the Special Co-operative Audit of Rural Surgery (SCARS); the Australian National Rural General Practice Study; A Study of Models of Sustainable Rural and Remote General Practice Services; A Study of Undergraduate Medical Placements with General Practitioners; and Development of a Minimum Dataset of GP Workforce and Skills.
