Karen L. Rebeiro Gruhl, Ph.D., M.Sc.O.T., O.T. Reg (ON)
Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord

I have endeavoured to publish and present research findings both locally, nationally, and to a lesser extent, internationally. I have not worked in an academic environment, but instead a clinical environment - the latter largely influencing my research and academic work. My research interests are broad, and I am interested in cross-disability research. In particular, I am interested in how people with disabilities participate and find meaning in their communities. My research to date has been a series of studies exploring the role of occupation on persons with serious mental illness, questions typically arising from the clinical environment. Each study has answered some of the clinical questions, but not all of them. My dissertation research is a logical extension of the work I have been doing for the past decade and examined the influence of place (social, physical, cultural, economic and political) upon access to paid employment for persons with serious mental illness. To understand this issue, I have drawn upon both qualitative and quantitative data sources. The complexity of understanding health issues within northern environments has influenced my use of mixed methods. The influence of health policy, northern environments or places, opportunities for collaborative/interdisciplinary partnerships within health services and the extent of differing health practices across northern Ontario are all important to the outcomes realized, yet, remain largely undervalued and under-researched. I am interested in learning more about how northern and rural places influence the participation of persons with disabilities in their daily occupations. Importantly, I am interested in learning how we can foster a more inclusive community that supports the participation of all of its citizens.
