Unikkaartuit Project
M. Kral, L. Kirmayer, J. O'Neil, R. Dyck, B. Minore, D. Wallace, and C. Fletcher

This is an intersectoral (university/government/community) research initiative designed to develop a culturally appropriate suicide prevention program for use in Inuit communities in the Eastern Arctic, a region with one of the highest youth suicide rates in Canada. The project, under the control of a local Inuit Steering Committee, involves (i) an ethnographic study to enhance understanding of key cultural issues; and (ii) based on the study's findings, developing, implementing and evaluating a prevention program. Field research was done in Igloolik and Qikiqtarjuaq. The Nunavut Social Development Council is a partner in the project, ensuring that the findings are taken into account in the territorial government's plans. Because of delays in translation, the funding period was extended.
