Investigators

Kristen Jacklin, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Northern Ontario School of Medicine

I am a Medical Anthropologist and Associate Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), Laurentian University Campus. I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology, McMaster University in 2007. I have 13 years experience conducting participatory health research with Aboriginal communities in Ontario. My work focuses on applied research that contributes to fair and equitable access to medical services and medical professionals for Aboriginal peoples; cultural safety; the provision of community and culturally appropriate health services; building community capacity for health research and community health services; and community empowerment.

My current research includes: (1) a qualitative community-based, multi-site, study concerning cultural understandings of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) among Aboriginal peoples in Ontario; (2) a long-term community-based diabetes research strategy with the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve; and, (3) a multi-national research initiative aimed at improving health outcomes for Aboriginal peoples through improved approaches to medical and health education.

I am also one of many co-Principal Investigators on the CIHR supported Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research (NEAHR) - The Indigenous Health Research Development Program (IHRDP). The IHRDP (www.ihrdp.ca) is committed to a student-centered and community capacity building approach to community-based Aboriginal health research.
