Mary Ellen joined the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research as a Senior Researcher in 1994. With a PhD in Medical Sociology from Vanderbilt University, she has worked as a co-investigator on a series of projects exploring health services and health human resources in rural, northern and Aboriginal communities. She also serves as a sessional lecturer in Lakehead University's Department of Political Science, teaching comparative health policy. Her current responsibilities involve the implementation of two ongoing projects exploring Aboriginal community, family and client health awareness issues. One initiative, on Aboriginal respiratory health, is being completed for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care; the other, on Aboriginal stroke education, is being conducted for the Ontario Stroke System. She previously has worked on other Aboriginal health research projects, funded by Health Canada, the Ontario Health Quality Council, the Ontario Mental Health Foundation, and the Ontario Women's Health Council. Mary Ellen also has acted as the CRaNHR lead on several projects commissioned by the North West LHIN. These include assessments of the "Share Your Story, Shape Your Care" initiatives, environmental scans of chronic disease and diabetes management and prevention initiatives and an exploration of forestry unemployment and health in Northwestern Ontario.
