CRaNHR is actively involved in training the next generation of health care researchers. The following describes some of these activities.
- The Ontario Training Centre in Health Services and Policy Research (OTC) is a multi-year initiative involving a consortium of six Ontario universities: McMaster, Lakehead, Laurentian, Ottawa, Toronto, and York. The intent of OTC is to develop and nurture the next generation of health services and policy researchers. A series of courses are offered to students in participating universities. Some CRaNHR Faculty Investigators such as R.W. Pong and E. Rukholm are OTC Principals.
OTC held its second Summer Institute at Laurentian University in June 2005, and the theme of the Summer Institute was "Health Human Resources Research and Policy: A Focus on Rural and Northern Issues." It focused on research and policy issues in relation to the health workforce, with an emphasis on health workforce challenges in rural or northern settings. CRaNHR was responsible for planning and hosting this week-long event, with the assistance of the OTC and the Summer Institute Planning Committee and funding support from the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Health Canada, and Canadian Institute for Health Information.
- A PhD Program in Rural and Northern Health was established at Laurentian University in 2006. It is the first and only program of its kind in Canada. Several CRaNHR Faculty Investigators are actively involved in this doctoral program, such as R.W. Pong, E. Rukholm, R. Strasser, E. Wenghofer, and N. Young. Dr. N. Lightfoot, another CRaNHR Faculty Investigator, is the director of the program.
- CRaNHR also provides research training to graduate students and research interns from Laurentian University and other universities. In the past, CRaNHR hosted visiting graduate students from University of Texas (Dallas, Texas), Shandong University (Jinan, China), Memorial University of Newfoundland, and University of Western Ontario.
